Surgicom: 6 Reasons You Should be a Member

6 REASONS WHY EVERY SURGEON IN PRIVATE PRACTICE SHOULD BE A MEMBER OF SURGICOM

  1. Members are kept up to date with the latest developments in the industry including important regulatory, coding and practice management issues.
  2. Members are able to attend the annual Surgicom Private Practice Business Weekend including full registration, hotel accommodation and all meals at no cost.
  3. Surgicom is currently completely revising the coding structure for general surgery involving many meetings with medical schemes. 103 new or revised codes will appear in the 2024 SAMA Doctors Coding Manual. These efforts are not possible without the support of every surgeon.
  4. Surgicom handles medical scheme forensic audits on behalf of all members. These are increasing in frequency and regularly involve attempted “claw-backs” running into several million rand. The Surgicom Help Desk also handles day-to-day issues where claims are incorrectly dealt with by schemes.
  5. Members are able to participate in the governance project with Discovery Health, generating simple discharge summaries paid at R560.00 per summary. Two summaries a month more than covers Surgicom membership fees.
  6. Private medicine is at a crossroads with the imminent passing of the NHI Bill into law as well as the Certificate of Need and price regulation in the private sector. Surgicom, through SAPPF is involved in responding to these legislative changes at the highest level. Every surgeon who plans a career in the private sector needs to play their part. Without a unified response on the part of healthcare providers, the future of private practice looks bleak indeed.
