‘Practical Solutions for Common Surgical Problems’


Dear Colleague

You are cordially invited to attend the Ninth Annual Surgical Update Conference hosted by the Department of Surgery at the University of Cape Town on Saturday 27th February and Sunday 28th February 2016 at the Kramer Building, UCT Middle Campus, Rondebosch, Cape Town.

An outstanding two-day program has been planned emphasizing common problems applicable to General Surgeons, General practitioners with a surgical interest, Medical Officers and Registrars. The faculty will comprise consultants from the Department of Surgery, University of Cape Town as well as invited speakers. Our 2016 overseas guests include prominent international figures in the field of colo-rectal and hernia surgery, namely:

  • Iain Anderson, Consultant Surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital Manchester, senior surgeon on the Intestinal Failure Unit and Director of Emergency Surgery at the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland
  • Karen Nugent, Senior Lecturer in colorectal surgery at Southampton University and immediate Past President of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland
  • Nicola Fearnhead, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, current chair of the Research & Audit Committee of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and chair of the Clinical Advisory Group for the National Bowel Cancer Audit
  • Thue Bisgaard, hernia expert from Hvidovre Hospital Denmark,

In response to requests and suggestions from previous update meetings the format has been adjusted to include clinical examples and applications and to allow for interactive discussions with audience participation. Sessions will focus on a particular theme and an interesting and attractive program is being put together which will have a broad range of appeal. Sessions currently planned include:

In addition, a proctology workshop is planned for Friday the 27th of February, to precede the update meeting. The workshop will address practical challenges in clinical practice and will have relevance for trainees, general surgeons and sub-specialists. The workshop will be separate from the update and details regarding registration for this will follow in due course..

We look forward to welcoming returning delegates as well as newcomers to what is becoming a rewarding annual meeting on the South African Surgical calendar.
