2) The 2011 ASSA/SAGES/EHPBA
The Cape Town 2011 congress including the ASSA/ SAGES and the 9th European - African Hepato Pancreato-Biliary Association Congress was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on
12 - 16 April 2011.
A world class postgraduate course, scientific programme, a host of renowned international speakers and superb organisation resulted in hugely successful congress. It was very well attended with approximately 1500 delegates, of whom 900 were representatives from over 60 countries.

3) Obituaries
It is with much sadness that we report the death of two members, Dr Johnny Marr and Dr Phoebus (Fifi) Perdikis. We send their families our sincere condolences. Dr Ian Marr (Johnny’s brother) and Prof Cedric Bremner have been kind enough to agree to contribute an obituary for each.

4) The death of DR Senzosenkosi Mkhize
The conditions and environment of the country’s public institutions and hospitals in particular are of ongoing concern for all of us. No more powerful reminder is needed than the recent murder of our young colleague Dr. Senzosenkosi Mkhize at the Middleburg Hospital on June 7, 2011. Dr Mkhize was stabbed by a patient and died soon thereafter from the injuries sustained. ASSA wishes Dr Mkhize’s family sincere condolences and hopes that the SAMA organized march to the Presidency on 15 June 2011, at the Union Buildings and the delivery of a Memorandum will help to inform of the plight of healthcare workers and the dire state of our public institutions.

7) Reciprocal Society News
ASSA continues to enjoy the reciprocity of several international societies. Professors Martin Veller and Sats Pillay attended the ASGBI meeting in Bournemouth in May 2011.
Professor Ken Boffard is the present Chairman of the International Surgery Society. The International Surgery Week is to be held in Yokohama, Japan August 28-September 1, 2011.
Professors Delawir Khan and Sats Pillay were invited to attend the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand in Pattaya, Thailand in July 2011. This will be held in conjunction with the American College of Surgeons.

8) Funds and dues
The present treasurer Ines Buccimazza delivered an excellent and thorough financial report at the Exco meeting held in April in Cape Town. The society’s finances are in a healthy state. However for administrative reasons many members did not receive their reminder for annual contributions. This has led to many of us being in arrears, and has now been addressed. Please look out for an account in the post and via e-mail.
The projected costs of maintaining the society have been examined and a nominal increase in subscriptions of 10% was approved at the last meeting.
The present subscription for 2011 is R1050.00.

9) Website
Please take some time to look at our website at www.surgeon.co.za. Your comments and suggestion would be appreciated.

10) The South African Journal Of Surgery
Professor Jake Krige has agreed to continue the editorship of the SAJS. Thanks to Professor Julien Oettle for 10 years of quiet, unfussy and excellent co-editorship. The SAJS is one of only two South African Journals to be listed on PubMed. Please support the journal and consider submitting publications

I look forward to an exciting and fruitful year on behalf of the society and would welcome any comments, suggestions and criticisms whether formal or not.

Michael Klipin
Secretary
